binders — Preparation of test samples (Identical withI461/2000).
Larger samples, i.e. more than 10 l, need more time for melting if the whole sample needs to be melted.Moretime than is needed for melting should not be used. The entire procedure (melting, homogenizing and moulding)should be carried out within 3 h 30 min,4 h and 4 h 30 min respectively.
lf necessary, to minimize loss of volatiles during heating, cover the container with aluminiumfoil or a loose fitting lid. Homogenize the entire sample by gently stirring manually.
NOTE: If the consistency is too high, the sample should be heated with care for 30 min maximum in a hot air oroil bath or equivalent until it becomes sufficiently fluid to pour.
For binders with a ring and ball softening point of 30 °C or less, the heating temperature shallbe 100 C maximum.
Avoid incorporation of air bubbles into the sample by allowing any air bubbles to escape.Pour the homogeneous liquid material into the mould or test sample containers.
Carry out the entire procedure (heating, homogenizing and moulding) within 45 min.Do not reuse the remaining sample, other than for cut-back binders and binders with a ringand ball softening point of 30 C or less.
Store the laboratory sample, obtained according to clause 4, in the oven, if necessary, at 18 °C to 28 °C, or in the laboratory if the ambient temperature remains withinthese limits. Record the storage temperature of the laboratory sample.Where the test material is obtained in parts, the part samples from the same origin (e.g. froma hardening test) shall be combined into one sample.Sufficient part samples shall be available, otherwise they shall be prepared.
The part samples shall be collected for subsequent testing in the steel melting pan and keptliquid or melted with care for not more than 30 min in a hot air bath or oil bath or equivalent. The temperature shall not exceed 80 °C to 90 °℃C above the expected softening point asdefined in EN 1427.For modified bitumen the temperature shall be between 180°C and200 °℃, irrespective of the softening point. Lower temperature required at later stages shallbe achieved by cooling.BS EN 12594 pdf download.
