th) Pedestrian fences which are solely to control the movement of pedestrians and not to protect pedestrians from impacts by vehicles or to guide drivers along a roadway.
The Standard does not provide guidance on—
(i) the comparative performance of road safety barrier systems or the preferred type of road safety harrier system to be installed and
(ii) procedures to position a road safety barrier system, either longitudinally or transversely, or with design related issues considered in warrants and selection of road safety barrier systems for a particular site, that include among other things barrier type, harrier length, sight distance, drainage, aesthetics, costs and environmental matters.
1.3 APPLICATION
The Standard does not specify which harriers are acceptable for use on a road network. The Standard does not specify the minimum performance level of acceptable road safety systems. The specification of the minimum performance level of a road safety barrier system is at the discretion of the Road Authority.
NOTF: Road Authorities not belonging to Austroads may use the process defined in (his Standard to decide whether a harrier is acccptable fiw their application.
This Standard should be used in conjunction with, Road Authority specifications and Austroads publications.
This Standard is not intended for application to existing installations or to road barrier systems that previously have been evaluated and adopted for use on a road network.
This part of the Standard and the Austroads Guide to Road Design—Part 6 support each other. Guide to Road Design—Part 6, describes the road and roadside configurations that require barriers to be installed and the appropriate longitudinal and transverse location of these barriers. This Standard sets out the requirements of a road safety barrier system. It details the preferred crash testing that is required to establish a system’s suitability, the material specifications and the accompanying documentation. Road Authorities may review the information specified by the Standard including the results of full-scale testing and, using the assessment process described in this Standard, considers the usefulness of the harrier system, terminal, interface, crash cushion, or longitudinal harrier gate for use.
