BS 7966 gives recommendations for thedesign of devices for removing corks from wine bottles.
NOTE General guidance on cork removal is given in annex A.
2Recommendations
2.1 No metallic part of the removal device shouldcontact the inside of the bottle.
NOTE Such contact can scratch and weaken the internal glasssurface, and this could cause the bottle neck to break as the corkis being extracted.
2.2No metallic part of the removal device shouldcontact the external surface of the bottle.

2.3 Contact surfaces of the removal device shouldbe made of non-metallic, non-abrasive material suchas wood or plastic.
2.4 Where possible, the removal device should havea centring mechanism so that the cork screw or
insertion part of the device enters the centre of thecork vertically.
2.5The removal device should be able to fullyextract the cork,without the user having to grip theneck of the bottle more tightly than is necessary tolocate and steady the device.
2.6 Devices using a pumping action or carbon
dioxide (CO2) cylinders should carry a label warningthat they should not be used to remove corks fromwine bottles which have a non-circular cross-sectionor from other types of non-standard wine bottle.NOTE Such bottles may not be capable of withstanding theinternal pressures generated by these devices.
A.1 Cork removal devices should not be used toremove corks which are wired on to the top of pressurized wine bottles,such as champagne bottles.Such corks are intended to be removed by hand according to the instructions on the label of thebottle.
A.2 If the glass of the bottle is damaged during useof a cork removal device, no further attempt shouldbe made to remove the cork.
A.3 Devices which use a pumping action or carbondioxide (CO2) cylinders should not be used to remove corks from wine bottles which have anon-circular cross-section or from other types ofnon-standard wine bottle.BS 7966 pdf download.
