3 DEFINITIONS
For the purpose of this Standard the definitions below apply.
3.1 Buddy line
A length of cord that can be tied or otherwise fixed to another person or to that person’s lifejacket or other objects, so as to keep a wearer in the vicinity of that person or object.
3.2 Deck safety harness and safety line
A device that allows a wearer to be securely attached to a strong point on a vessel or on shore, so as to prevent falling into the water, or, if falling into the water does occur, to prevent being separated from the vessel or shore.
3.3 Freeboard
Distance measured vertically from the water surface to the lowest point of respiration with the person wearing the lifejacket and in a normal floating position in fresh water.
3.4 Grab strap
A device that assists the manual handling of a person in the water, and is not intended to be used as a primary lifting device.
3.5 Lifejacket
A garment or device which, when correctly worn and used in water, will provide the wearer with a specific amount of buoyancy which will increase the likelihood of survival. Also known commonly as a ‘personal flotation device’ (PFD) or buoyancy vest’.
3.5. 1 Automatically inflated life jacket
A lifejacket. in which inflation is effected as a result of immersion without the wearer
carrying out any action at the time of immersion.

A lifejacket of combined buoyancy types, i.e. inherent and inflatable.
3.5.3 Inherent/v buoyant material
Material which is permanently less dense than water.
3.5.4 Man na//v in flated lijej ackc’t
A lifejacket in which inflation is effected as a result of the person operating a mechanism.
3.5.5 Oral inflation
A secondary means of inflating a lilejacket. Devices that rely solely on oral inflation are not compliant with this Standard.
3.5.6 Vest-vpe hf ejacket
A lilejacket encircling the torso.
3.5.7 Yoke-type lif’/acket
A lifejacket worn around the back of the neck and secured by a waist strap.
3.6 Multi-chamber buoyancy system
A system that divides the buoyancy provided by an inflatable lifejacket into two or more separate compartments.AS 4758.1 pdf download.
